Martignoni, Jimena.
Medellin: Experimental Architecture as an Instrument of Social Change.
Medellin, the second largest city in Colombia, is a clear example of a profound self-motivated reinvention: After being known for decades only as a place of violence, since the beginning of the new millennium this Latin American city has been transformed into a beacon of hope and creativity. Supported by the local government and a group of forward-thinking Colombian architects, Medelin has forged a new image of itself based in experimental architectural projects that have become genuinely useful tools in the implementation of inclusive urban-social change. Internationally published projects such as the Espana Library by Giancarlo Mazzanti, the Orquideorama by Restrepo and Plan B, or the Temple of Ashes and Crematorium by Felipe Uribe, are examined in detail and put into the new local, social context.
