A+U 12:10 #505: Super Danish - Design from Denmark?
While architects throughout Europe and the rest of the world have struggled in the global recession, Danish architecture is flourishing. This month, Architecture and Urbanism magazine travels to Scandanavia, to investigate the NEW WAVE spreading from this North Sea nation. Danish architects are reinventing their nation's image for predictably clean and functional design by proposing radical, irreverent, and often ironic, new building schemes. Is Denmark the new Netherlands? The comparison with Super-Dutch architecture in the 90's is difficult to avoid since they share a strong genealogy. Upstarts like BIG and JDS, are headed and staffed by the young, charismatic alumni of Dutch practices like OMA and MVRDV. Some have quickly emerged as important global practices in their own right, expanding to China, the US, and beyond. We feature and interview 10 young practices at the forefront of this movement. We ask where they are targeting the bold vision driving and energizing their architecture? Making the case that Denmark is not merely the NEW Netherlands of Architecture, our guest essayists Kurt Martinussen and Boris Brorman Jensen argue that Danish architecture is redefining the vanguard of international design.
